The 30-second PSA, shot at the Tigard (Orc.) Public Library, stars Trail Blazers’ guard Terry Porter and en courages children and adults to "check out the action” at the public library. “ I was pleased to rediscover the public library,” said Poler. “ I had fo r gotten how much is there and sec that now, there’ s so much more besides books that you can use lo r free. I have to say I was impressed.” The initial idea olThe T ra il Blaz ers PSA came from the Washington County Cooperative Library Services (W C C LS), a network o f 11 local l i braries in Oregon, governed by seven cities, a nonprofit association and the county. W CCLS also includes school and special libraries. “ WE felt that the image o f a much - admired professional athlete on a w ell- known team, talking about the useful ness o f public libraries, would impact both here in the Portland area and else w he re ,” said Peggy F o rc ie r, WCCLS coordinator. “ We hope that the PSA w ill inspire more people to lake advantage o f the resources o f today’ s public libraries.” A L A w ill distribute the spot to the top 50 television stations nationwide. Charles completed 25-36 passes for 390 yards, and 3 touch downs. The 2-0 Vikings take on Texas A&l 7:00 pm Saturday at Civic Stadium. The Democrats opened the 1992 Football season by running past Lincoln 34-6. Mark Burke led the way by scoring three touchdowns on runs o f 10,4, and 2 yards. Burke also kicked two extra points. In other highlights for Jefferson, Thomas Jacob ran 19 yards for a touch down,and Hakecn M cCallister had a 35- yard k ic k o ff return. The Democrats w ill face Cleveland High School at Cleve land on Friday, September 18. And now, introducing: Rod Strickland Rod Strickland, ranked among the N B A ’ s top point guards the past two seasons, signed a free agent contract w ith the Portland T ra il Blazers in June. Strickland ranked fifth in the league in assists last season w ith an 8.6 aver age, to go along w ith a scoring average o f 13.8 points in 57 games as the San Antonio Spurs’ flo or leader. The 6- foot-3 four-year veteran tied fo r 12th w ith Terry Porter on the league’ s assist lis t w ith an 8.0average during the 1990- 91 season. “ Rod Strickland has proven to be a very good point guard, one o f the best penetrators in the game and terrific on the fastbreak,” said G e o ff Petrie, Portland’ s senior vice-president o f op erations in making the announcement. “ His presence in our lineup gives us much more fle x ib ility among our guards than we have had before. He has made strides on an o ff the court during the past year and should have a bright fu ture w ith the Blazers. “ O bviously, w e’re excited to be able to sign a player o f Strickland’s a bility. We are always seeking to im prove our team and the addition o f Rod Strickland is a significant step in that ongoing process.” In four seasons w ith the New York K n ic k s and San A n to n io Spurs, Strickland has averaged 11.4 points, 6.3 assists and 27.4 minutes, shooting .464 from the fie ld and .669 at the foul line, in 278 games. His 3.67 assist/ turnover ratio through four seasons was bettered by only six players during the 1991-92 N B A season. A fter sitting out the first 24 games o f last season w ith a contract holdout, Strickland averaged 13.8 points, 8.6 assists, 2.07 steals and 36.0 minutes for the Spurs. He poured in a career-high 28 points against Indiana on February 6 and distributed a career-high 19 assists at Minnesota on March 3. He was named to the N B A all-Rookie Second Team before being traded to San A n tonio in exchange for veteran guard Maurice Cheeks on February 21,1990. He enjoyed a strong post-season in 1990 in which he averaged 12.3 points and 11.3 assists in 10 games. The Blazers and Charlotte Hornets meet in the 20th annual N B A Basket ball Hall o f Fame on Tuesday, Novem ber 6 at the Springfield C ivic Center in Springfield, M A , birthplace o f basket ball and site o f the Basketball Hall o f Fame.
